چکیده

Overlay networks have emerged as a fundamental technique for efficient data dissemination. Current overlay construction techniques typically face a number of limitations, including: i) limited scalability because of reliance upon global knowledge, and ii) performance characteristics targeting the requirements of a particular class of applications. In this paper, we propose dynamically organizing overlay nodes into clusters that form the basis for a hierarchical overlay network. Overall, we find that the exponential improvement in both scalability and network overhead to typically be worth the resulting reduction in overlay quality. Next, we evaluate the relative benefits of existing graph and overlay construction algorithms with respect to varying application requirements. We find that light approximate shortest-path trees (LAST) allow application developers to flexibly trade communication cost with delay along a continuous spectrum. More importantly, for our target network topologies, we find LAST settings that result in cost and delay values within 15% of optimal.

Analysis of searching mechanisms in hierarchical p2p based overlay networks

This work presents a study of searching mechanisms in Peer-to-Peer (p2p) networks. The aim of this research line is to analyse cross-searching mechanisms that will allow the hierarchical interconnection of p2p networks. A set of relevant metrics for interconnection scenarios are defined to evaluate scalability, robustness and routing latency.

Timely, Reliable, and Cost-effective Transport Service using Dissemination Graphs

. We present preliminary work that demonstrates the feasibility of deploying an Internet transport service that can support applications with stringent timeliness and reliability requirements (e.g. 130ms round-trip latency across the US with 99.999% reliability). We describe an approach to building such a transport service based on overlay networks and dissemination graphs. In this approach, ea...

Vertical Handoffs in Wireless Overlay Networks

No single wireless network technology simultaneously provides a low latency, high bandwidth, wide area data service to a large number of mobile users. Wireless Overlay Networks — a hierarchical structure of roomsize, building-size, and wide area data networks — solve the problem of providing network connectivity to a large number of mobile users in an efficient and scalable way. The specific to...

Are Virtualized Overlay Networks Too Much of a Good Thing?

The majority of recent high-profile work in peer-to-peer networks has approached the problem of location by abstracting over object lookup services. Namespace virtualization in the overlay layer provides load balance and provable bounds on latency at low costs. We contend that namespace virtualization comes at a significant cost for applications that naturally describe their data sets in a hier...

Content-based XML Data Dissemination

XML-based data dissemination networks are rapidly gaining momentum. In these networks XML content is routed from data producers to data consumers throughout an overlay network of content-based routers. Routing decisions are based on XPath expressions (XPEs) stored at each router. To enable efficient routing, while keeping the routing state small, we introduce advertisement-based routing algorit...
